If you have already begun your English learning journey, you will know that there can be a significant difference between how a word is written on the page and how it is pronounced. As with any language, it is important to master the verbal use of English as much as the way you handle it in writing. There are many different factors to consider, from which syllables should receive the most emphasis in a word to managing those words that have silent letters (e.g., subtle). If you want to perfect your British English pronunciation, here are our tips to help you do so.
- Dedicate time to listening to examples of authentic speech. There are many different ways to do this, from watching films to listening to the radio or podcasts. Try to pick up on the intonation used when someone speaks. If it helps, choose a few short phrases and repeat them using the same intonation as the original speaker.
- Listen back to your own pronunciation. Sometimes it is only when we hear ourselves speak that we realize how far off we are in terms of pronunciation. A simple way to correct this is to record yourself speaking—take those short phrases you have practiced and record them so you can listen back to how you sound and notice where you can improve your speech.
- Familiarize yourself with the phonetic alphabet. This is incredibly useful because most dictionaries will provide you with a phonetic transcription of the word you have looked up. If you are able to use it, you can avoid many of the mistakes that non-native British English speakers tend to make. Gain familiarity with the International Phonetic Alphabet and you may see your pronunciation skills take off.
- Use dictionaries. In addition to the phonetic description you will get from a print dictionary, there are also online dictionaries where you can actually listen to the pronunciation of the word you may be struggling with. Using them is a quick and easy way to gain confidence by working with a reliable source.
- Spend time on minimal pairs. These are essentially words that have almost the same pronunciation with only one difference, for example, kip and keep. Working with minimal pairs can help increase your familiarity with these words and give you a framework for approaching the pronunciation of unfamiliar words in the future.
- Start doing some vocal exercises. Native speakers of a language often tend to move their mouths in a similar way, and this can create challenges for anyone trying to learn that language who is more familiar with another. It may be that some sounds seem almost impossible to produce because they do not appear in our native language at all. Vocal exercises can help increase ease and familiarity with all the sounds of British English and train your mouth to feel comfortable producing them—the Sounds of English section on the BBC Learning English website is an excellent resource for this.
These are just some of the simple ways you can perfect your British English pronunciation.
