If you have already begun your English language learning journey, you will have realized that there is quite a difference between the spelling of a word and its pronunciation. As with any language, it is important to familiarize yourself with the oral use of English, and not simply stop at the written form. There are several aspects to consider, such as which syllables are stressed or learning those words that have silent letters (e.g., subtle – the B is not pronounced). If you wish to perfect your British pronunciation, here are some useful tips.
- Dedicate time to listening to real speech. There are several ways to do this, from watching films to listening to the radio and podcasts. Focus on the intonation used by the speakers. If it helps, choose some short phrases and repeat them using the same intonation as the original.
- Listen back to your pronunciation. Sometimes it is only when we listen to ourselves that we realize how incorrect our pronunciation is. A very simple way to correct yourself is to record yourself while speaking. Use those short phrases you have practiced and record yourself, then listen back to determine whether you are on track or need to adjust.
- Learn the phonetic alphabet. It is truly useful because almost all dictionaries provide the phonetic transcription of words. If you can use it, you will be able to avoid many of the mistakes that non-native speakers tend to make. Familiarize yourself with the International Phonetic Alphabet as well, and your pronunciation will improve remarkably.
- Use dictionaries. In addition to the phonetic transcription found in printed dictionaries, online ones also offer the possibility of listening to the pronunciation of the word that is causing you difficulty. Using them is a quick and simple way to increase your confidence, using a reliable source.
- Practice with minimal pairs. These are words that have almost the same pronunciation, apart from one small difference, such as kip and keep. Working on minimal pairs can help you become more familiar with these words and will enable you to tackle the pronunciation of unfamiliar words you encounter.
- Start doing vocal exercises. Generally, all those who share the same mother tongue move their mouth in a certain way, and this can pose difficulties for those learning it as a second language. Some sounds seem almost impossible to reproduce because they may not exist in our mother tongue. Vocal exercises can help you increase your ease in reproducing British English sounds and train your mouth for this purpose. On the BBC Learning English website, the Sounds of English section is an excellent resource for this purpose.
These are some simple suggestions on how you can improve your British English.
