A lingua franca is a language adopted as a means of communication between individuals who all have different native languages. English is the most widely used language in the world, particularly in business and finance. Regardless of your origins and ambitions, having a solid command of English—and being able to use it as a lingua franca—is essential for accessing opportunities to live the life you desire.

How Did It Become a Lingua Franca?

The use of English as a lingua franca is linked to Britain’s colonial past, following which English automatically became the language used in many areas of the world. Although the colonial era has long ended, English remains the language of choice for communication worldwide, including in developing countries. It is also the language used by businesses, both small or local and large multinational corporations, and collaboration between partners located in different nations relies on English, which both parties must know.

Why Is English So Important?

  • Because it enables you to be international. Since English is a lingua franca, knowing it allows you to cross the borders of your own country, physically or through digital collaboration. Because virtually everyone working in large companies speaks English, this means that being able to communicate in English allows you to be international and broaden your horizons.
  • It can be the key to success. Especially if you are considering working in a field where excellent knowledge of English is a fundamental requirement. Career opportunities may even be tied to your ability to communicate in English with members of your team and beyond.
  • It is essential if you want to work internationally. Many institutions and organizations around the world use English as their official language of communication, and you need to be able to speak it if you want to work for these organizations. English is the official language in over 70 countries, and nearly all business documents—from emails to reports and communications between colleagues—are in English. Furthermore, many companies take it for granted that you can converse fluently in English with clients if you want to join their team.
  • Some sectors have even adopted English as their official language. For example, shipping or aviation: to work in these fields, knowing English is a fundamental requirement. Moreover, it is not enough to speak this language well; you must also be able to express yourself correctly and fluently in writing.

English is spoken everywhere in the world, and being able to use it as a lingua franca represents an enormous advantage. It could be a prerequisite for certain professions and job opportunities and can also represent a communication channel that will enable you to pursue the career you desire in your chosen field.
