Why Grade Every Session

07/05/2026

The Problem With “Good Enough”

Fluctuating bar chart

Most professionals who speak English as a second language can use it to communicate. Their English is strong. They can hold a conversation, write a clear email, follow a complex discussion. But in situations that matter – the boardroom, the client pitch, high-stakes negotiations – they can struggle to express themselves with the confidence and clarity required.

And that can be costly.

When your English is functional, it’s easy to plateau. There are few or no errors so grave they cause a breakdown in communication. No grammar rules that matter are being broken.

The issues are more subtle.

  • It’s the response that was too long when brevity would have commanded the room.
  • The phrase that was technically correct but lacked the weight the moment required.
  • The habit of mentally translating, then speaking, which results in a half-second delay that comes across as uncertainty rather than thoughtfulness.

These are communication effectiveness problems. And they require a different kind of intervention.

How Does Grading Every Session Help?

At the heart of our methodology is something most coaching programs don’t offer, and that is that we grade every session.

This approach is not designed to integrate testing for the sake of testing but to make the invisible visible

Every session is graded against the specific objectives we define at the start of the session, whether that’s commanding presence in leadership meetings, delivering concise and persuasive arguments, or eliminating the patterns that undermine your credibility.

That grading is structured across three dimensions:

  • Language: covering both accuracy and the complexity required to make an impact;
  • Task Achievement: meaning how effectively you accomplished the specific objective of that session; and
  • Communication: which spans everything from how you interact in a live exchange to how you navigate and mediate competing perspectives.

Together, they give a complete and consistent picture of where your communication is working – and where it isn’t.

Grades will naturally fluctuate depending on the objectives of each session  tasks are designed and adapted to challenge you to perform to a higher standard. That variation is actually one of the most valuable things the grading reveals.

It gives us a clear picture of where you perform with confidence and where the real development opportunities lie. Progress isn’t always a straight upward line, nor should it be. What matters is that the overall trajectory is moving in the right direction.

The purpose of consistent grading is to create a clear record of where you are, where you’re moving to, and — critically — where progress is stalling so we can identify the areas you need most support with.

Over time, the pattern that emerges from session to session gives us an honest account of your progress and your gaps.

Results That You Will Actually Notice

Our clients don’t come to us to learn grammar. They come because they want to walk into a meeting and get the results they were looking for. They want colleagues to stop finishing their sentences for them. They want to be the person whose contributions are sought, rather than politely accommodated.

That requires precision in the work produced, and in how the work is measured.

Grading is how we ensure that every session moves you closer to that outcome. It replaces good intentions with accountability.

If this sounds like you, we’d be glad to tell you more about how we can help.
